Edward Hunting Miller was born in 1826 in Greenville, New York, and moved to California to mine for gold in January 1849; he sailed on the ship Pacific and arrived in California in August. After mining for a few months, he moved to Sacramento and opened a general store with Mark Hopkins (who he had met on his voyage to California).
